About the Journal

The Journal of Geospatial Science and Technology (JGST) is an International double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published quarterly in English and French (March, June, September and December), by the African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST), Obafemi Awolowo University Campus, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Our purpose

JGST publishes research on the science, methods and application of geospatial information: geographic information systems, remote sensing and Earth observation, surveying, geodesy, photogrammetry, cartography and spatial analysis. Its particular concern is the use of those tools to address the social, economic and environmental challenges facing African countries — how land cover is changing, where erosion and other hazards threaten, where a landfill or a health facility should go, and who can reach the services a city provides.

The journal's first volume opened in 2014 with a lecture on geospatial technologies for resource development in Nigeria. It has since carried work from Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana, and it welcomes contributions from researchers anywhere whose work advances the theory, methods or practice of geospatial science.

English and French

AFRIGIST serves English- and French-speaking Africa alike, and JGST publishes in both languages. Manuscripts are accepted in English or French, and every article carries its abstract in both, so that research done in one language community is found and read in the other.

A sister journal

AFRIGIST also publishes the AFRIGIST Journal of Land Administration and Environmental Management (AJLAEM). Where a paper's main contribution is to land administration, land governance or environmental management rather than to geospatial science itself, it will usually be better placed there.

Open access

Everything JGST publishes is free to read, download and share from the day it appears, under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 licence. There is no subscription and no paywall.

The subject areas we cover and the manuscripts that fall outside our remit are set out on the Aims & Scope page. Submissions are made through this website, and the Author Guidelines carry everything an author needs: manuscript preparation, referencing, how review works, fees, ethics and copyright. Published work is in the Archives.
