About the Journal

The AFRIGIST Journal of Land Administration and Environmental Management (AJLAEM) is an International double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published quarterly (March, June, September and December) in English and French, by the African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST), Obafemi Awolowo University Campus, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Our purpose

AJLAEM exists to advance the understanding and practice of land administration and environmental management, particularly in Africa and other developing regions. It publishes theoretical, methodological and applied research on land tenure and governance, cadastral and land information systems, land-use and spatial planning, environmental assessment and monitoring, climate change, natural resource management and disaster risk — and it looks for work that leads somewhere: towards responsible land governance, environmental stewardship, evidence-based planning and more resilient communities.

The journal is deliberately interdisciplinary. Who holds land, how a forest is shared, why a city loses its green cover and where fire strikes a market are at once questions of law, administration, environment and society, and AJLAEM brings those perspectives together. Since its first volume in 2021 it has carried work from Nigeria, Benin and Niger, and it welcomes contributions from researchers and practitioners anywhere.

Geospatial technologies

As a journal of AFRIGIST, AJLAEM particularly encourages research that applies modern geospatial technologies to land and environmental problems: geographic information systems, remote sensing and Earth observation, satellite positioning, spatial databases, unmanned aerial vehicles, machine learning and web-based land information systems.

English and French

AFRIGIST serves English- and French-speaking Africa alike, and AJLAEM publishes in both languages. Manuscripts are accepted in English or French, and every article carries its abstract in both, so that research done in one language community is found and read in the other.

A sister journal

AFRIGIST also publishes the Journal of Geospatial Science and Technology (JGST). Where a paper's main contribution is to geospatial methods, sensors or analysis rather than to how land and the environment are managed, it will usually be better placed there.

Open access

Everything AJLAEM publishes is free to read, download and share from the day it appears, under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 licence. There is no subscription and no paywall.

Submissions

The subject areas we cover and the manuscripts that fall outside our remit are set out on the Aims & Scope page. Submissions are made through this website, and the Author Guidelines carry everything an author needs: manuscript preparation, referencing, how review works, fees, ethics and copyright. Published work is in the Archives.
